Responding To A Tragedy: IQ and Starfish  What Is Starfish?
 Starfish was formed in response to the unfolding tragedy of children orphaned or affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. Starfish was founded in London, England by a group of young South Africans and their friends in 2001. Motivated by our founding parable, Starfish believes that each of us can make a difference to the lives of the children of South Africa orphaned or affected by HIV/AIDS.
What Does It Do? By challenging perspectives and beliefs, Starfish seeks to mobilise (and inspire!) individuals in their various fields of influence to bring life, hope and opportunity to these children and their communities. In this way, Starfish is developing a global community – a community heightened in its awareness of the problems of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and determined to overcome them. Starfish aims to provide community-based solutions that strengthen families and communities. Funding is provided on two levels – to address priority needs such as nutrition and education, and to develop day care and resources centres within the local community. These ‘Star Centres’ will provide services such as trauma counselling, help with homework, teaching of social skills, and supervised play and sports. They will address the developmental, nutritional, and educational needs of local children, working in partnership with existing schools and community groups. Starfish Greathearts Foundation is registered as a charity in England and Wales (Registered Charity Number: 1093862) and has offices and operations in South Africa. What Is IQ Doing With Starfish? The partnership between IQ and Starfish began when IQ sponsored the inaugural Starfish ball in London in November 2001, as well as the 2002 ball. IQ also sponsored the South African gala ball 2002. Importantly, IQ provides starfish with office space in South Africa and all the supporting office infrastructure required. This includes office rental space, office equipment, electricity, stationery, telephone accounts, receptionist and boardroom facilities. IQ partners with and promotes staff involvement in Starfish projects.
