CARING CORPORATE

IQ And Community Literacy Projects: Tikkun What Is Tikkun? Tikkun (meaning “helping transformation”) is the Jewish community’s nationwide social services project that addresses issues from adult education to skills training to AID’s relief work. Founded in 1996 with Nelson Mandela as Patron-in-Chief, Tikkun has rapidly established itself as capable of running effective projects in partnerships with corporate patrons.
What Does It Do? Tikkun has a number of key projects: · Tikkun-Alexander Forbes Core of the Aged Project · Based in Alexandra this project is renovating rooms and shacks belonging to elderly destitute residents as well as providing food. · Diesploot · Creation of a community centre including a crèche, primary school, AIDS awareness and rehabilitation centre and adult skills training centre. · Rietfontein Farmers Development Trust · Creation of agricultural projects by the local community with assistance from Tikkun. This included sinking a borehole, installing irrigation systems and starting farming. A service centre and crèche have also been created. · Hillbrow/Tikkun Inner City community centre · The ultimate aim is to create a community outreach centre providing a range of social services and educational projects in Hillbrow. Situated in buildings next to the Temple Israel Synagogue in Claim Street there are currently a children’s pre-school playgroup and various adult skills classes running. · Orange Farm · There are two centres for home-based caregiver groups trained by Tikkun plus kitchens which provide hot meals for 400 patients a day. The next project at Orange Farm is the Child Headed Household Development, for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. What Is IQ Doing With Tikkun? IQ’s original project involved getting computer literacy lessons up-and-running, by donating both money and utilising volunteers from IQ. IQ has installed ten computers at the Riviera site and a new training manual has been paid for, which can now be trained on. The next batch of computers (new ones to minimise maintenance costs) have been installed, working in partnership with Tikkun and SAAYC (South African Association of Youth Clubs), who provide the educators and lesson structure.
